A few understudies of the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday deliberately obstructed a rescue vehicle and prevented doctors from reaching an ailing teacher on grounds, following which authorities threatened to take “extreme action” against them.

Crux of the Matter

  1. This regrettable incident happened during the student’s protest against the Dean of Students, Prof. Umesh Kadam

  2. Due to the high tension scenario, Kadam fell victim to high blood pressure.

  3. “They surrounded the ambulance and forced it to be taken to the University Health Centre, rather than to the hospital as suggested by the doctor. The DoS is being confined now in a doctor’s office and the students have surrounded the Health Centre,”said the JNU registrar.

  4. JNU in recent times has been in the news because of the “tukde tukde” incident during 2016 when anti-India slogans were raised as JNU students protested the hanging of convicted terrorist, Afzal Guru and separatist insurgent Maqbool Bhatt.

  5. Current Finance Minister Nirmal Sitharaman as well as 2019 Economics Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Banerjee are both alumni of the prestigious institution.

The JNU has the reputation of an “unruly bastion of Marxist revolution.” However, the student activists deny the charge, stating that the politics at JNU is issue-based and intellectual. The university is known for its alumni who now occupy important political and bureaucratic positions . In part, this is because of the prevalence of Left-Centric student politics and the existence of a written constitution for the university to which noted Communist Party of India leader Prakash Karat contributed exhaustively during his education at JNU.
