From the time when Maharashtra election results were announced on October 24, Shiv Sena and BJP pre-poll alliance has been fighting over chief minister’s post leading to delay in government formation. On 8th November 2019, CM Devendra Fadnavis tendered his resignation to the Governor B S Koshyari.

Crux of the Matter

  1. The alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena along with other parties ‘Mahayuti’ got clear majority with 161 seats out of 288.

  2. CM Fadnavis while addressing a press conference he said there were no talks of sharing the chief minister’s post in his presence and nor Amit Shah or Nitin Gadkari have promised anything.

  3. Soon after this press conference ended, Uddhav Thackeray also addressed a press conference and alleged BJP of lying and putting false accusations on the party.

  4. Amidst the deadlock, party delegations of BJP, ShivSena, NCP, Congress have met Governor B S Koshyari to update on the political scenario.

  5. NCP President, Sharad Pawar already announced that his party will sit in the opposition and will not claim stake to form the government.

  6. With no party staking claim to form a government and the post-election political movements by the Shiv Sena has put Maharashtra under uncertainty by saying we have ‘all options open’.

  7. Both Shiv Sena and BJP are waiting on each other’s call to either renegotiate terms or walk out of the alliance.

  8. If this deadlock stays, governor will have to request for President’s rule in the state.
