Bharat Bandh: Protests Against Working Policies

India saw a strike on 8th January for the fourth time since 2014. The protest was against the working-class policies of the government. 10 biggest trade unions were part of the protest and thousands of people took part in it across India.


Crux of the Matter


  1. Railways and Roadways faced problems in several states like West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Banking sector faced a jolt of financial transaction worth Rupees 22,000 crores across India.

  2. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been labeled as double-sided by Left, as she declared that West Bengal would not support the strike.

  3. Further there were reports of violence in Bengal during the strikes.

  4. The government had already declared a guideline on Tuesday. It said that the employees who participate in protest will have to face “consequences“.

  5. In Chennai, the ruling party AIADMK didn’t support the protest whereas opposition party DMK was in support.

  6. In Kerala, normal life had been disturbed as banking services were halted as 25,000 bank employees joined the protest. Kerala State Road Transport was also shut down due to the strike by its member staff.

  7. In Maharashtra, government extended its support for the protest.

  8. Center’s proposed amendments on the Electricity Act and privatization of public companies were key reasons for protest.

  9. Current Policies in the Power Sector sparked rage among 15 lakh employees of the power sector. They demanded the implementation of the old pension schemes.

  10. LIC employees were protesting against change in labor laws, inflation and unemployment, disinvestment of the public sector and move to take LIC to the stock market.
