BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Calls Nathuram Godse 'Deshbhakt'

BJP MP from Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has landed herself in trouble and the BJP in controversies over her comment on Nathuram Godse as a “patriot” during Lok Sabha proceedings.


Crux of the Matter


  1. The incident occurred in the parliament on 27th November during a Lok Sabha discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, when DMK member A Raja quoted a statement by Godse on why he killed Mahatma Gandhi wherein Pragya Thakur interrupted him and said he couldn’t give the example ‘of a deshbhakt‘.

  2. The comment led to protests from parliamentarians and walk-out by the Congress party.

  3. Congress MP, Rahul Gandhi has tweeted saying it is sad in the history of parliament. He also said, “she shows the heart of BJP and RSS and it cannot be hidden anymore.”

  4. Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh has removed Pragya Thakur from the defence panel just 8 days after her appointment.

  5. Condemning her statement; she has been barred from attending BJP parliamentary meeting during this session.

  6. The Congress also staged a protest in Bhopal on 28th November and demanded PM Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah to take strict action and expel her from the party.

Pragya Singh Thakur known as Sadhvi Pragya, is a Member of Parliament representing Bhopal and belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. She has been an active member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). She is accused of the 2008 Malegaon bombings where 10 people were killed and 82 more were injured. She faced arrest for terror charges after her bike was found at the scene of the crime, but was granted bail on health grounds. She contested the 2019 general election against Digvijaya Singh of the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and won her debut contest by a margin of 364,822 votes. More Info
