
The Union Cabinet on December 24 approved the creation of the post of Chief Of Defence Staff who will be a single-point military adviser to the government to ensure jointness in training, logistics and procurement of the three services.
Crux of the Matter
The post will be the rank of 4-Star General with a salary equivalent to Service Chiefs.
The CDS will not have any operational role and military command and will only ensure coordination in joint operations.
The government will create a Department of Military Affairs within the Ministry of Defence.
CDS will be the head of the Department and will function as its Secretary.
It is seen as a historic decision for ushering reforms in the higher defence management in the country.
The government gave its nod after analysing the Kargil Review Committee report of Task Force on National Security and the Committee of Experts on Enhancing Capability and Rebalance Defence Expenditure.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “the decision to create CDS is a major step towards bringing about joint manship between the Armed Forces.”
The creation of this post was announced by PM Narendra Modi in his 2019 Independence Day address.
