Nearing the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, the Kartarpur Corridor is set to open for Sikh Pilgrims visiting Darbar Sahib Gurudwara. Showing signs of worry over Pakistan’s timing to flood the gate open for Kartarpur, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh asks State to be cautious of the ‘ulterior motives‘ of Pakistan, given their terror-sponsoring ways.

Crux of the Matter

  1. The Kartarpur Corridor will facilitate the Sikh pilgrims to visit the Kartarpur Gurudwara where Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life.

  2. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh hinted at the menace that Pakistan Army has been causing at the border. These concerns are especially grave considering the history of ISI-sponsored terrorism in the Khalistan Movement that had caused havoc in the border state and still raises its ugly head from time to time.

  3. Saying that there should be no negativity in this decision and that the onus of security will be on the Indian Government, Opposition believes that the corridor will act as a ‘bridge‘ between the nations.

  4. To commemorate the Kartarpur corridor, which Pakistan will open on 9th November, Pakistan has issued a coin and a postage stamp. Pakistan also plans to impose a $20 service tax per visit for every devotee.

The Kartarpur Corridor is an under-construction border corridor between India and Pakistan, connecting the Sikh shrines of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib. Currently, under construction, the corridor is intended to allow religious devotees from India to visit the Gurdwara in Kartarpur, 4.7 kilometres from the Pakistan-India border, without a visa. The prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, compared the decision to go ahead with the corridor by the two countries to the fall of the Berlin Wall, saying that the project may help in easing tensions between the two countries.
