Certification For Aatmanirbhar - Country Of Origin Tags

In recent times, the government has taken an aggressive stand in terms of trade and commerce by introducing various measures and passing laws to reduce India’s dependency on imports from other nations to make India self-reliant. Now the government has made it mandatory for e-commerce players to display country of origin tag.

Crux of the Matter

Boosting Make in India The government has made it mandatory for e-commerce companies to display ‘country of origin’ of products sold on e-commerce platforms. Moreover, the government has also introduced a ‘Make in India’ filter on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. It will allow buyers to choose products that meet the minimum 50% local content criterion. The government has given a deadline to e-commerce companies to mention tag of origin by 1st August for new listing and 1st October for an old listing. It is believed to be an indirect move to reduce dependency on China.

Woes Of Companies However, e-commerce companies have responded that this deadline is not feasible and have sought more time to implement the changes. Companies have also put forward the suggestion of implementation of this change in a phased manner with the involvement of manufacturers and sellers in the process. They have also given assurance to support and boost Make in India initiative. Flipkart has agreed to mention tag on new products by 15th August whereas Amazon has asked for 2-3 months. Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said that it will discuss the introduction of the relevant legal provisions with the consumer affairs ministry.
