Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made an announcement that the year 2020 would be the year for Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan. ISRO Chairman, K Sivan also announced that 4 astronauts shortlisted for the Gaganyaan mission will be sent to Russia for training.

Crux of the Matter

  1. ISRO chair, K Sivan stated that the configuration of Chandrayaan 3 will be identical to Chandrayaan 2 except for a few technical changes like a new detachable module to carry fuel. ISRO has received a nod from the government for the mission and its budget.

  2. The cost of Chandrayaan 3 would be around Rs. 615 crores, comprising of Rs. 250 crores for shuttle and Rs. 365 crore for the launch. The cost of Chandrayaan 2 was Rs. 960 crore.

  3. K Sivan also recalled the lessons learnt from Chandrayaan-2, the previous mission of ISRO to land on the dark side of the moon. This mission failed because of a failure in communication with the Vikram lander.

  4. Ganganyaan will send a three-astronaut crew to space for a minimum of seven days. The short-listed 4 candidates will undergo medical check-up and space training in Russia at Glavoscos, a Russian Space Launch Agency.

Curiopedia

Gaganyaan is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft intended to be the formative spacecraft of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme. The spacecraft is being designed to carry three people, and a planned upgraded version will be equipped with rendezvous and docking capability. In its maiden crewed mission, Indian Space Research Organisation’s largely autonomous 3.7-tonne capsule will orbit the Earth at 400 km altitude for up to seven days with a two or three-person crew on board. The crewed vehicle is planned to be launched on ISRO’s GSLV Mk III in December 2021. This HAL-manufactured crew module had its first un-crewed experimental flight on 18 December 2014. As of May 2019, design of the crew module has been completed. More Info
