In his I-Day speech, PM Narendra Modi announced the formation of a new post of Chief of Defence Staff to increase synergy between the three armed services and to act as a single-point military adviser to the defence minister.
Crux of the Matter
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) will head the tri-services.
This move was first proposed after Kargil War of 1999 following a report from Kargil Review Committee.
A post of a permanent chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee was recommended by the Naresh Chandra Task Force in 2012.
Current Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat may be appointed first CDS as per speculations.
