India slammed China for bringing up the issue of Jammu & Kashmir at the UN Security Council by saying that J&K was, is, and shall be India’s integral part. Pakistan, who was also slammed by India in February for internationalizing the issue of Article 370, has become the last country to contribute to SAARC Coronavirus fund and skipped a crucial SAARC meeting on trade.
Crux of the Matter
India-China Tussle Over J&K At the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Meeting, China brought up the issue of Jammu & Kashmir and said that the issue was a historical one that needed to be resolved via the UNSC that has J&K high on its agenda. India issued a solid statement against the mention of J&K and “rejected the reference to Jammu and Kashmir in a statement made by the spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations.” Indian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that Jammu & Kashmir was, is and will be an integral part of India and that China is well aware of the consistent position of India on the matter. He further said that China or any other nation should refrain from commenting on the matter of J&K as it is an internal matter. He also mentioned that China should rather take into account and condemn the cross-border terrorism that affects the lives of people of India, especially those living in J&K.
China’s comments come at a time when India is helping the Coronavirus-hit nations by sending essential medicines like Hydroxychloroquine and Paracetamol. India even sent 15-tonnes of medical supplies to China’s Wuhan while it was battling the virus when it was at its peak. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi had also asked India to not label and stigmatize the virus as the “Chinese virus” or “Wuhan virus”. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that India would not label the virus and urged the international community to send signals of solidarity.
Pakistan Did That Too, and What is it Doing Right Now? In late February, Pakistan had also brought up the issue of Article 370 at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). India, then also, had strongly opposed internationalization of the issue and said that J&K was, is and will be an integral part of India. A couple of days later, India showed Pakistan the mirror by outlining certain recommendations like curbing terror funding and forced marriages of women from minority communities.
Pakistan also was the last nation to contribute to the SAARC fund that was proposed by Indian PM Modi. It delivered the pledged $3 million and said that the use of the fund should be administered by SAARC Secretariat and utilized after consultation with member nations. Pakistan also skipped a crucial SAARC nations meeting on ‘Trade in the time of Coronavirus’ organized by Indian PM Modi. Pakistan said that the meeting was not organized by the SAARC secretariat who was also not going to be present there and therefore it boycotted the meeting.
Assistance in material and services has been extended to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. These Saarc countries have also made early commitments to the Fund. The degree of seriousness of each nation can be gauged by their behaviour. Anurag Srivastava, Spokesperson, Indian Foreign Ministry
