CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who is also the head of the bench of the NRC process in Assam, asserted National Register of Citizens (NRC) as the base document for future India. Recalling the Assam Accord of 1985, CJI Gogoi said that the NRC was just the update to curb the violence and insurgency on account of conflicts with illegal immigrants.
Crux of the Matter
National Register of Citizens’ (NRC) announcement of the final list renders more than 19 lakh people out of 3.3 cror stateless; whose strand of hope now is the appeal to the foreigners’ tribunals (FT) in 120 days since the announcement.
CJI Gogoi, while referring to the 1985 Assam Accord – an MoS to resolve the illegal immigration issues in Assam – urges to focus on the inherent value of the NRC given the history of immigrant-backed terrorizing situations in the state.
Despite NRC having created a chaotic situation on account of protests against cut-off date, difficulty in proving the citizenship, and the challenge for the State to decide what to with the ‘stateless’, CJI Gogoi eyes this as the base document for the future and the tool to reduce the immigrant menace.
