Coca-Cola has been named the worst company for plastic pollution for the second year running by an environmental pressure group. The global beverage brand emerged first in a list of companies contributing the most to pollution, published by Break Free From Plastic (BFFP).
Crux of the Matter
BFFP cleaned around 500 beaches this September, and found around 11,732 Coca Cola products’ plastic waste.
Coca Cola’s waste ouput was more than the next three global polluters combined.
Coca Cola has stated that it will address this critical issue.
Unilever, Mars, P&G, Colgate-Palmolive and Phillip Morris are other major companies among the top 10 worst polluters for plastic waste.
Curiopedia
Story behind Coca-Cola’s name: When launched, Coca-Cola’s two key ingredients were cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was derived from the coca leaf and the caffeine from kola nut (also spelled “cola nut” at the time), leading to the name Coca-Cola. Although Coca-Cola denies usage of cocaine, the original formula called for five ounces of coca leaf per gallon of syrup (approximately 37 g/L), a significant dose. In 1891, Candler claimed his formula (altered extensively from Pemberton’s original) contained only a tenth of this amount. Coca-Cola once contained an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass in its early days. Coca was removed from the formula in 1903. More Info
