
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementations (MoSPI) issued that the Consumer Spending report would not be issued on account of the wide gap between the actual data and data collected by other administrative authorities as well as in the data for the level of consumption.
Crux of the Matter
The Government has decided to dump the Consumer Spending Report for FY 2017-18 due to issues in data quality.
There have been recommendations in the improvement of the survey methodology and quality on a ‘concurrent basis‘ so as to facilitate future surveys. Ministry is mulling over the years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 for the next Consumer Spending survey.
Consumer Spending Surveys are conducted every 5 years. The previous survey was conducted in 2011-12 as the 2009-10 survey was not an appropriate base year due to drought and economic adversaries.
