COVID Combat: Hospitals and Beds in India

Crux of the Matter


Coronavirus Update Coronavirus cases in India have crossed the 10,000-mark and the death toll is over 350. With nearly 2,500 cases as of 14th April 2020, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu.

The growing number of cases has compelled the Centre and States to extend the lockdown to 3rd May 2020. On 14th April, India recorded its highest single-day new cases, 1,211. PM Modi announced that the lockdown will be gradually lifted from 20th April in areas where the pandemic is creating less havoc. Although, it would be with certain restrictions and will be reinforced if COVID-19 cases start showing up in the region.

Building Beds, Health, and Nation Indian Health Ministry spokesperson Luv Agarwal said that India has an arrangement of 1 lakh isolation beds for COVID-19 patients. He added that 11,500 ICU beds have also been reserved for patients with severe symptoms. Looking at the number of cases at the beginning of the lockdown – 550, if lockdown had not been implemented, India would have had 8.2 lakh Coronavirus cases till April 15. Till now there are approximately 600 hospitals equipped to treat COVID-19 patients. As per global experience, 15% of all the positive patients need a hospital bed. By that number, nearly 1500-1600 patients require beds if 10,000 are infected.
