India Nepal tensions

Indo-Nepal diplomatic relations deteriorated when Nepal commented on India’s “spreading” of a deadlier Coronavirus while claiming to integrate 3 disputed territories in its own.

Crux of the Matter

Nepal Clashes In the latest official national map, Nepal included the disputed territories of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura in its own territory. The announcement came within days of India inaugurating a road from Dharchula in Uttarakhand to Lipulekh for the aid of pilgrims on route to Mansarovar. Nepal also accused India of spreading the Coronavirus in Nepal with a stronger version of the virus.

Those who are coming from India through illegal channels are spreading the virus in the country. It has become very difficult to contain COVID-19 due to the flow of people from outside. Indian virus looks more lethal than Chinese and Italian now. KP Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal

Nepal Communist Party The incumbent ruling party in Nepal is the Nepal Communist Party (NCP). It is a relatively new group formed by the merger of 2 major Nepalese communist parties: Marxist-Leninist and the Maoist. Prime Minister Oli comes from the former group. Since its formation the party has overseen a conflict between 2 sections. Nepalese Assembly’s recent passing of a law to ease a party’s splitting, in times of worldwide pandemic, strengthens the analysts’ claim of internal tension. Political pundits say NCP is also aided by the Communist Party of China, observed recently when the Chinese ambassador was involved in solving NCP’s internal conflicts. Political observers have also termed the Indo-Nepal border conflict as facilitated by China to divert the world’s spotlight on its failure of curbing the Coronavirus’s spread, with the additional benefit of inducing anti-India sentiment in Nepalese people.

There have never been any earlier disputes (with Nepal). There is reason to believe that they might have raised these issues at the behest of someone else. That is a possibility. MM Naravane, Chief of Indian Army

Sino Strategy In Times Of Covid Indo-China border recently saw an increase of tension in Sikkim and Ladakh. China’s steps have strengthened analysts’ claims who assert that it is an attempt to increase anti-India sentiment in both Nepal and China. Some observes have also pointed to China’s aggression as an act of retaliation against the recent shifting of industries from China to India and other nations.

US Reaction US President Donald Trump has already accused China of hiding information regarding Coronavirus. In the light of recent Indo-China border disputes, the US has sounded a clear warning and labeled China’s behavior as “disturbing”.

The U.S.’s top diplomat for South and Central Asia, Alice Wells, called the recent tensions between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) a reminder of the “threat” posed by China.#China #India #UShttps://t.co/DYbFSj4Ffi — The Hindu (@the_hindu) May 20, 2020
