As India tries to gradually come out of lockdown and resume the new-normal, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a sanitizer to sanitize currency notes, that can be the potential carriers of Coronavirus. DRDO’s machine can even sanitize mobile phones and laptops. Here is how.
Crux of the Matter
What is DRUVS? To tackle the issue of sanitizing objects in the post-COVID era, DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) department has developed the Defence Research Ultraviolet Sanitizer (DRUVS). This device sanitizes objects placed in the cabinet by projecting UVC rays from 360-degrees. Proximity sensor switches that open and close the machine’s drawer makes its operation automatic and contactless.

Mobile phones, iPads, laptops, currency notes, challans, papers, passbooks, etc. can be sanitized using this machine. The machine is available in three variants and the retail price of the topmost variant is expected to be around ₹55,000. DRDO is working on reducing the price of the machine so that is affordable to the common man.
Dirty to Clean, Just Not Black to White Currency notes are assumed to be a potential virus carrier. India being a cash-rich economy, must take into account this issue before gradually lifting the lockdown. DRDO’s RCI developed a specialized machine to sanitize bundles of currency notes. It is called NOTESCLEAN.

The Indian government is also encouraging people to use digital payment on a daily basis. During the ongoing lockdown, there is a spike in digital transactions in the country as well.
