On Monday Karnataka chief minister B.S.Yediyurappa cancelled all approvals for the controversial Elevated Corridor Road (ECR) project in Bengaluru, citing irredularities in the tender process. The government will re-evaluate estimates for the project.
Crux of the Matter
Yediyurappa blamed irregularities in the awarding of the tender as the primary reason for cancellation of the project.
Bengaluru with over 10 million population and 7.5 million vehicles is plagued with traffic congestion. The 88 km long ECR was proposed as a solution for this.
Citizens of Bengaluru had earlier shown displeasure at the estimated cost of Rs 27000 crore and the potential felling of 3500 trees for facilitating ECR.
The outgoing JDS-Congress government had awarded roadways project tenders when it was poised to collapse. This has led to a lot of roads in the city being left in a dug up state.
