After the delegation of 27 Members of European Parliament visited Jammu and Kashmir, they addressed the media wherein they fully supported India in its efforts to maintain peace and fight terrorism. The visit has been strongly criticised by the opposition parties.
Crux of the Matter
EU delegation reached 15 Corps Headquarters in Srinagar where they were briefed by the army about Pakistan’s role in fuelling terror in Kashmir Valley.
The delegation observed the ground situation and interacted with people to understand their views on government’s move to scrap Article 370.
Addressing the media Henri Malosse, President of European Economic & Social Committee said, “Kashmir has all elements to become one of the most dynamic regions of India. Kashmir despite receiving subsidies, is backward because of the situation.”
Khalid Jehangir, BJP leader claimed that the sole purpose of the visit was to give the delegation an understanding of the present situation in Kashmir.
Amidst this visit, British MEP Theresa Griffin via a tweet clarified that the EU delegation visit does not represent the European Parliament.
On the sidelines of the visit, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad hit out at the BJP government for not allowing ‘own elected representatives’ to visit the state of J&K. Apart from Congress, leaders from NC, CPI(M), AAP have criticised the visit of the unofficial foreign delegation.

Together with the Council of the European Union, it adopts European legislation, normally on a proposal from the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 751 members (MEPs), intended to become 705 starting from the 2019–2024 legislature because of specific provisions adopted about Brexit, who represent the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India) and the largest trans-national democratic electorate in the world (375 million eligible voters in 2009).
