
After the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, the first Block Development Council (BDC) elections were held on 24th October in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh. These polls recorded a massive 98.3 per cent voter turnout.
Crux of the Matter
The polls to elect chairpersons of BDCs were held in 310 blocks and 1,092 candidates were in the fray, of whom 27 were elected unopposed.
There were 26,629 electors: 8,313 women and 18,316 men for the polls to elect chairpersons of BDCs.
Congress, National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the first electoral exercise after the abrogation article 370.
Independent candidates swept the polls across the state, winning 217 of 307 panchayat blocks in all three regions of Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh.
Independents won 19 of 22 districts across J&K, while BJP won in only 2 districts. Jammu-based Panthers Party won in one district.
In the Ladakh region, BJP won 11 and Independents won 20 blocks. In the Kashmir Division, out of 128 blocks which went to polls Independents secures 109 and BJP won 18.
