The 29-year-old Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray won from Mumbai’s Worli constituency by 67,427 votes. He made history by becoming the first member of his family to contest and win an election. He is likely to play a key role in the next state government and hold key portfolios.
Crux of the Matter
Ever since the Shiv Sena was founded by the late Bal Thackeray in 1966, no member of the family has contested any election or held any constitutional post.
But with changing nature of politics, Sena Leadership now wants to keep reins of power in hand rather than having a remote control by appointing others who have failed to remain loyal to the party in the past.
Even his estranged uncle Raj Thackeray, the chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has never contested any election.
Aaditya Thackeray, a pass out of the Bombay Scottish School, joined politics in 2009. Since then he has been active in Shiv Sena, building a cadre of new young leaders.
He proposed the revival of Mumbai’s nightlife by allowing malls and restaurants to be open all night.
He is currently the President of Yuva Sena – youth wing of Shiv Sena founded in 2010
