During an Anti-CAA rally, Tamil scholar Nellai Kannan, a former Congressman, allegedly made controversial remarks on PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He said he was confused why people had not “finished off” Modi and Shah yet. He was arrested on three charges and will be produced in front of the court on January 13.
Crux of the Matter
During an anti-CAA protest organised by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), 75-year-old Kannan, allegedly tried to incite people by stating that he was puzzled why Muslims have not finished off Modi and Shah yet.
He was also critical of Tamil Nadu CM K. Palaniswami, Deputy CM, and others.
BJP leaders held a protest at Marina beach in Chennai. They demanded the arrest of Kannan.
He was charged under IPC Sections 504, 505 and 505 (2) for inciting violence, provoking someone to indulge in violence, and inciting violence between groups.
He is kept in judicial custody in Madurai prison for 12 days and will be produced before the Tirunelveli court on January 13th.
His political, religious, and social commentary in recent has been controversial. Apolitical views and social commentary on different groups exploiting people have kept Kannan in the centre of controversies.
