According to France’s competition authority, the U.S. based tech. company Google, is mistreating buyers of ads based on keywords. Reports suggest that methods used by its Ads platform are applied in an unequal and arbitrary way and thus a fine of 166 Million Dollars has been imposed

Crux of the Matter

  1. This is the latest addition to a string of European fines against Google, which faces very little competition for search engine business across the continent.

  2. The tech giant has been subsequently asked to clarify the rules for Google Ads and its procedures for freezing accounts, to avoid “brutal and unjustified” suspensions.

  3. Google said in a statement that it would appeal and that its advertising policies are designed to protect consumers “from exploitative and abusive ads.”

  4. While the EU says that Google’s argument of protecting its consumers is “perfectly legitimate,” its rules are applied incoherently, with some companies’ ads allowed and others that sell similar services suspended.

  5. Its chief, Isabelle de Silva, told a news conference that Google has two months to produce a detailed proposal of measures and procedures it intends to implement to bring its practices into line

Curiopedia

Google Ads, formerly known as Google AdWords, is an advertising system in which advertisers bid on certain keywords in order for their clickable ads to appear in Google’s search results. Since advertisers have to pay for these clicks, this is how Google makes money from search. It includes Google Ads auction, bidding processes and factors in important factors like Quality Score and cost-per-click. The actual position of your ad is determined by your ad rank (Maximum Bid times Quality Score) More Info
