Curiopedia
Census is a procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. The United Nations defines the essential features of population and housing censuses as “individual enumeration, universality within a defined territory, simultaneity and defined periodicity”, and recommends that population censuses be taken at least every ten years. The information generated by the census – numbers of people, their distribution, their living conditions and other key data – is critical for the development. The oldest recorded census in India is thought to have occurred around 330 bc during the reign of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya under the leadership of Chanakya and Ashoka. More Info
