Government to Unveil 'National Policy on Official Statistics'

Government of India has decided to shortly unveil a National Policy on Official Statistics; according to which the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has started working on the policy which will provide ‘timely and credible’ social and economic data.


Crux of the Matter


  1. The government will set up a task force to prepare a roadmap for putting the policy in practice which will address data quality issues with regards to various surveys and provide authentic economic and social data to the people.

  2. The policy shall create synergy between the Centre and the states in statistical matters which will promote an ecosystem for ‘informed debate’ on various social and economic issues.

  3. The ministry has a proposal to set up a National Statistical Development Council which will be an independent authority headed by the Prime Minister that would replace the National Statistical Commission (NSC).

  4. Ministry also proposes to make the chief statistician a permanent member of the NSC to improve coordination between the NSC and the government.

The National Statistical Commission (NSC) of India is an autonomous body which formed in June 2005 on the recommendation of Rangarajan commission. The NSC is currently headed by Prof. Bimal K. Roy who was appointed as Chairperson of the Commission on 15th July 2019 for a period of three years. Dr. Kiran Pandya, Shri Pulak Ghosh and Dr. Gurucharan Manna are other members of the Commission. The objective of its constitution is to reduce the problems faced by statistical agencies in the country in relation to the collection of data. Statistical agencies like the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) face numerous problems in collecting data from State and Central government departments but lacks to coordinate things.
