
A high-level review meeting on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was chaired by NSA Ajit Doval December 24 decided to withdraw 72 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) from the J&K with immediate effect. Additional forces were deployed in the month of August when the government revoked Article 370 and 35A.
Crux of the Matter
The meeting was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir G C Murmu, Union Home Secretary Ajay K Bhalla, Home Minister Amit Shah and Senior Security Advisor K.Vijay Kumar.
Four months later this decision was taken after closely reviewing the security measures and normalcy in the valley.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered the withdrawal of over 7,000 paramilitary troops from Kashmir.
24 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force, 12 each of the Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal will be withdrawn.
Post removal of Article 370 the CAPF deployment had increased to 653 companies.
The normal deployment in the Valley is about 200 CAPF companies in addition to Indian Army and J&K Police.
