India and Japan hold Bilateral Talks on Sidelines of 14th East Asia Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Japanese PM Shinzo Abe which prepared ground for India-Japan 2 plus 2 Dialogue. Both the leaders agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in third countries for peace, prosperity and development in the region.


Crux of the Matter


  1. External Affairs Ministry in a press release said the two prime ministers reaffirmed their commitment towards a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region based on a rules-based order.

  2. The two leaders also discussed China’s fast expanding military and economic expansionism in the Indo-Pacific region.

  3. Both the leaders also reviewed the progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project.

  4. This was the third meeting between the two leaders in past 4 months. Japanese PM will be visiting India next month for the inaugural ‘two-plus-two’ Indo-Japan foreign and defence ministerial dialogue.

India–Japan relations have traditionally been strong. The people of India and Japan have engaged in cultural exchanges, primarily as a result of Buddhism, which spread indirectly from India to Japan, via China and Korea. In August 2017, the two countries announced the establishment of the Japan-India Coordination Forum (JICF) for Development of North-Eastern Region. The forum focuses on strategic projects aimed at improving connectivity, roads, electric infrastructure, food processing, disaster management, and promoting organic farming and tourism in northeast India. More Info
