Crux of the Matter

Jiribam-Imphal railway line project is a national railway project connecting Manipur with other states of India and the land of seven sisters. The total length of the line is 110 kilometres long passing through hills and valleys in Manipur. This rail line project is expected to cost around ₹13,000 crores. It comprises 47 tunnels of a total length of 62 kilometers and as many as 139 bridges. 100m Feat! India’s first rail bridge with a pillar of the height of 100 meters has been constructed as a part of the Jiribam-Imphal rail line project. This bridge is situated on river Makru in the district of Tamenglong, Manipur, and is 555 meters long. It is approximately equivalent to a height of 33 storey building. Due to the presence of anti-social elements in the region, CRPF personnel and Manipur Rifles force was deployed at the site to protect railway and construction personnel.

It is Unique and Important Another attractive aspect of this rail line is that the world’s tallest grinder bridge of 141-meter height is being constructed – the height is twice the height of Qutub Minar. Currently, Mala-Rijeka viaduct in Europe is the world’s highest at a height of 139 meters. The estimated cost of the tallest bridge will be around ₹280 crores and it will be constructed over Ijai river in the Noney district of Manipur. The State Government has vowed to develop world-class tourist facilities to boost tourism, economy, and job opportunities in the state.
