Indian Railways Conducts Recruitment Drive for 1.27 lakh Positions

In what is one of the world’s largest recruitment drive, Indian Railways received a mammoth 2.4 crore applications for 1.27 lakh posts that included assistant loco pilots (ALPs), technicians, junior engineer (JE), Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS), etc. Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), for the recruitment drive that began in 2018, has deployed a flux of modern testing methods such as computer-based tests (CBT), physical tests, and medical tests.


Crux of the Matter


  1. For the total vacancies of 64,371 for Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) and Technicians, 47.45 lakh applications were received.

  2. There were 63,202 vacant positions for the Level-I posts and 1.9 crore applications were received for the same.

  3. For the posts of ALP and Technicians, the first stage of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) was conducted in 33 shifts in 2018, while the second stage, for only ALPs, in 9 shifts. The attendance in the CBT was approximately 77% in the first stage and 84% in the second.

  4. For Level-I posts, the CBT test was conducted in 152 shifts across 16 cities of India in just 51 days. Out of the 1.9 crore applicants, 61.71% appeared for the test.

  5. For JE/DMS/CMA posts, the CBT was conducted in the month of May and June. Of the 24.75 lakh candidates appearing for the test in 35 shifts across 109 cities of India over a period of only 12 days, 62.5% were present.
