The global count of COVID-19 patients has crossed 3.5 million mark and the death toll is more than a quarter million. Researches are being carried out across the globe to find a vaccine. Israel, in a potentially major breakthrough, developed a monoclonal antibody, that supports and mimics antibody development, to cure Coronavirus. Complete Coverage: Coronavirus
Crux of the Matter
Israel Proves Its Healthcare Rank Israel has more than 16,000 COVID-19 cases and 200+ deaths. Israeli scientists at Israel’s Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) achieved a breakthrough in developing a potential cure for Coronavirus by developing an antibody. IIBR developed antibodies that attack the virus in a monoclonal way and neutralize it within the bodies of those ill. To develop antibodies, virus samples were brought from Japan, Italy, and other countries and were kept in a frozen state at -80 degrees Celsius.
I am proud of the institute staff for this terrific breakthrough and their creativity and the Jewish mind brought about this amazing achievement. Naftali Bennett, Defence Minister, Israel
Is it a Victory? After successful testing, the vaccine is under the process of obtaining a patent. Mass production begins only after the patent approval. However, Israel hasn’t disclosed whether or not it has conducted human trials of the vaccine. Israeli Defence Ministry also stated that the researchers would also collaborate with global firms to manufacture antibodies on a large scale
What is an Antibody? Antibodies are a Y-Shaped protein made up of plasma cells. This Y-Protein is used by the immune system to neutralize pathogens that have entered the human body. It is mainly used against pathogenic bacterias and viruses. Interestingly, information on various antibodies is stored in the human brain.
What is Monoclonal Antibody? Monoclonal antibodies are artificial molecules which can restore, enhance, or mimic the immune system’s attack on damaged cell. Monoclonal antibodies are also used in cancer treatment. The monoclonal antibody can attack the antigen in various ways: – blocking its growth – attacking its cell membrane – flagging antigens for immunity cells, etc.
