
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been charged with criminal charges of breach of trust, bribery, and fraud. This is the first time in the history of Israel that a sitting Prime Minister has been charged. These charges raise questions on the certainty of Netanyahu’s position.
Crux of the Matter
PM Netanyahu said that the long-standing charges against him were manufactured to topple his leadership in Iran.
He is facing bribery charges in the case called Case 4000. It has been alleged that he provided regulatorily benefits of around $280 mn to Shaul Elovitch in return for coverage benefits from her website.
He has also been alleged for taking expensive gifts from foreign businessmen in return for benefits in the case called Case 1000.
He is also facing charges for the potential deal between him and an Isreali newspaper owner Arnon Mozes. He would get more coverage in the newspaper in return for passing a law that would reduce the rival HaYom’s circulation lesser.
Netanyahu is not regulated to stepdown for the legal charges filed against him. A Knesset member who can gain the support of most of the lawmakers can get the post of the PM.
