ISRO Launches RISAT-2BR1 and 9 Other Satellites on PSLV-C48

With the launch of the RISAT-2BR1 and other 9 satellites on the PSLV-C48, ISRO marked the 50th launch of the PSLV and 75th vehicle launch mission from Sriharikota. RISAT will be deployed to assist clear imaging that is further useful for application in fields like disaster management.


Crux of the Matter


  1. PSLV-C48 took off from Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 3:25 PM on 11th December 2019.

  2. It carried India’s 628-kg earth observation satellite, RISAT-2BR1 -a Remote Imaging Satellite used for radar imaging. It also carried 6 satellites of the USA, and one each of Japan, Israel, and Italy.

  3. This satellite will be used to provide images of the earth’s surface. It will enable the previously unavailable feature of capturing at night or while there are clouds.

  4. The 5-year mission of RISAT2-BR1 will facilitate in the fields of disaster management, forestry, agriculture and others.

  5. Completing the quartet of ‘spying satellites‘, ISRO is set to launch two more satellites in the RISAT-2B series.

RISAT-2B – Radar Imaging Satellite 2B is an Indian radar reconnaissance satellite that is part of India’s RISAT programme and the third satellite in the series. It is built by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to replace RISAT-2. It’s main sensor is an indigenously developed Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging satellite operating in X Band with 3.6 m radial rib antenna.
