HRD Ministry on 9th January 2020, announced that hostel students of JNU will not be charged service and utility cost for the current semester.

Crux of the Matter

  1. A three-member panel appointed by HRD recommended that “There should not be a fee hike in the middle of running academic year”.

  2. Students marched up to HRD ministry and had a meeting with officials regarding fee hike and hours after it, the Ministry reconsidered the decision.

  3. According to the circular, “The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has already written to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to release the funds towards the Service and Utility charges in the hostels”. The service and utility charges will be borne by UGC.

  4. Representatives of students and teachers had also put forward a demand for removal of the Vice-Chancellor of the University. Masked goons attacked JNU campus after JNUSU had attempted to stop online winter registrations as a part of the protest against fee hike.

  5. BJP leader Murli Mohan Joshi tweeted saying that JNU V-C Mr.Jagadesh Kumar should resign over the fee hike.

Curiopedia

Jawaharlal Nehru University – JNU is infused with an intense political life on campus. Students that leave campus are said to acquire a “permanently changed outlook on life” as a result of the student politics. The politicisation of campus life has led to a refusal to brush under the carpet social issues such as feminism, minority rights, social and economic justice. All such issues are debated fiercely in formal and informal gatherings. The JNU student politics is left-of-centre even though, in recent years, right-wing student groups have also entered the field. Political involvement is “celebratory in spirit.” The student union elections are preceded by days of debates and meetings, keeping all students involved. The university is known for its alumni who now occupy important political and bureaucratic positions. More Info
