Kerala gets approval for Semi-high speed rail Project Worth ₹66,000 cr

In a joint venture of the Kerala government and the Ministry of Railways, the Centre gave in-principle approval to the ₹66,000 crores Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod semi-high speed rail (SHSR) corridor project on December 17. This rail corridor is expected to cut travel time between the two cities from 12 hours to 4 hours.


Crux of the Matter


  1. Kerala Rail Development Corporation (KRDCL) is the agency implementing for the 540-km double-line project.

  2. The project is expected to create 50,000 jobs and employment for 11,000 on completion.

  3. Trains will pass through 11 districts at a speed of 200 km per hour with minimum land acquisition.

  4. V. Ajith Kumar, Managing Director, KRDCL said, “the approval was a milestone in the project implementation. It’s expected to fast-track the economy of Kerala.”

  5. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had held discussions for this project with Japanese experts during his recent visit to Japan.

  6. This project will prove to be a game-changer in Kerala’s infrastructure and economic development.
