
Horrors of infant deaths in Kota, Rajasthan has spread to neighboring state Gujarat. Rajkot, the constituency of CM Rupani, and Gujarat’s financial capital Ahmedabad reported a high number of infant deaths in the month of December.
Crux of the Matter
State-run Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Hospital in Rajkot reported the death of 111 infants in the month of December only. While Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital reported 88 deaths in the same period. Infant death toll over the last three months of 2019 reached 269 in Rajkot and 253 in Ahmedabad
The superintendent of Rajkot’s hospital attributed the deaths to multiple neural defects, low birth weight, malnutrition, premature birth, malnourished mother, and sepsis. Ahmedabad’s civil hospital also cited similar reasons.
Officials say that most of the children died were transferred in a critical condition to the government hospital from private hospitals.
Reports say that the hospital in Rajkot does not have enough capacity and that it does not have the medical facilities to treat children born underweight.
State Health Minister Nitin Patel said that the birth rates increase during the month of December, and so does the infant mortality rate.
