
After the Supreme Court of India fixed the Wednesday deadline for floor test to prove majority, both Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar have resigned.
Crux of the Matter
In the midst of fast paced political developments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was engaged in a closed-door meeting with BJP chief Amit Shah, who is also the Union home minister, and the party’s working president J P Nadda after the Apex Court ordered a floor test in the Assembly on top priority and without wasting time.
Fadnavis announced that he was submitting his resignation to the Governor at a press conference an hour after Pawar had resigned. Fadnavis said that he would meet the Governor after the press conference.

Devendra Fadnavis is an Indian politician who served as the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra, in office from 31 October 2014 to 12 November 2019. He was sworn in for the second term on 23 November 2019 after getting the support of NCP MLA Ajit Pawar, but both resigned on 26 November 2019, a day before the floor test, which was ordered by the Supreme Court of India to be carried out.
