Around 60 leaders of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) along with thousands of party workers joined the BJP on Sunday. As per BJP (also ex-TDP) leader Lanka Dinakar, many are joining BJP after passage of triple talaq bill and removal of Article 370.
Crux of the Matter
In the wake of BJP’s massive Lok Sabha victory and abrogation of Article 370, many political leaders from across the political aisle are jumping ship to join the BJP.
Recently 10 MLAs from Sikkim Democratic Front joined BJP, making it the single largest opposition in Sikkim assembly.
Senior leaders from the ruling party in Karnataka, JDS also shifted allegiance to BJP to enable it to return to power.
Goa BJP also saw the arrival of 10 leaders from Congress in the past couple of months.
While BJP leaders credit their merit-based organisation and development agenda for attracting leaders from opposing parties, detractors have raised concerns of BJP becoming all too powerful.
