
The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) an umbrella organisation of eight student bodies of the North-Eastern region has launched massive protest marches across the region on 18th November against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
Crux of the Matter
Students organisations have hit the streets of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh against the Citizenship Amendment Bill which is likely to be reintroduced in the winter session of Parliament.
The protesters submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah against the bill through the governor of each state.
Section 144 had been imposed in Shillong. Members of the All Assam Students Union marched up to Raj Bhavan in Assam. In Manipur, people against the bill called for a statewide shutdown.
In Meghalaya, the BJP’s coalition partners, UDP and NPP, have also opposed the bill.
Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit Meghalaya soon to hold talks with groups opposed to the bill.
All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) are some of the organisations protesting against the bill.

Indian Citizenship Amendment Bill was proposed in the Lok Sabha on July 19, 2016, amending the Citizenship Act of 1955. If this Bill is passed in the Parliament, refugees from minority communities like Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan will be eligible for Indian citizenship excluding people from the Muslim community. Under The Citizenship Act, 1955, One of the requirements mandated 11 years of residence in India to be eligible for citizenship. The amendment would reduce this period to six years.
