
Amidst protests by Pakistan and China, the Government of India released the new political map 3 months after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 carves out two new Union Territories – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, totalling the number of UTs in India to 9 and States to 28.
Crux of the Matter
The larger part of the state is occupied by the UT of Ladakh, which would include the districts Leh and Kargil.
The UT of Jammu & Kashmir would include 28 districts, out of which the new 14 were formed through the Reorganisation Act, 2019.
Gilgit, Gilgit Wazarat, Tribal Territory and Chilhas have been brought together to form the district of Kargil.
Aksai Chin is also now declared as a part of Ladakh.
Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, and Punch, three districts under the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) now part of the Jammu & Kashmir UT.
Gujarat Cadre IAS Officer, Girish Chandra Murmu appointed as the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu & Kashmir, and Tripura Cadre ex-bureaucrat, Radha Krishna Mathur as the LG of Ladakh.

1988 Gilgit Massacre – In 1988 a revolt by the Shias of Gilgit Baltistan was ruthlessly suppressed by the Zia-ul Haq regime. The Pakistan Army led an armed group of Sunni tribals, from Afghanistan and the North-West Frontier Province, into Gilgit and its surrounding areas to suppress the revolt. The first major anti-Shia riots in Gilgit broke out in May 1988 over the sighting of the moon, which ushers the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Read more.
