The targeted strike by Israel Defence Forces killed the top commander of the Iranian-backed Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad’s Baha Abu Al-Atta in Gaza on 12th November. It has resulted in worst-ever cross-border fighting in recent months.
Crux of the Matter
Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said “Abu al-Ata was an “arch-terrorist” and a “ticking bomb” who posed an imminent threat to the country.”
Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip retaliated with more than 200 rockets into Israel.
In response, Israel launched dozens of airstrikes on Islamic Jihad targets in Gaza killing so far 32 Palestinians.
Mourners fired guns into the air chanting “revenge” at Al-Atta’s funeral in Gaza.
United Nations has been actively involved to de-escalate the situation.
Curiopedia
Israel-Palestine conflict is the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians that began in the mid-20th century. It is referred to as the world’s “most intractable conflict”, with the ongoing Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip reaching 52 years. Despite a long-term peace process and the general reconciliation of Israel with Egypt and Jordan, Israelis and Palestinians have failed to reach a final peace agreement. The key issues are mutual recognition, borders, security, water rights, control of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, Palestinian freedom of movement, and the Palestinian right of return. More Info
