
The Parliament on 3rd December passed the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 officially combining two Union territories into one entity.
Crux of the Matter
The merged Union Territory will be named as Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
The town of Daman would be the new capital for the combined UT.
Rajya Sabha passed the bill with a voice vote and Lok Sabha had already passed this bill on November 27.
It is done with the aim to strengthen the administrative efficiency and is expected to cut down administrative costs and fast track the development of the two union territories.
Bombay High Court’s jurisdiction will continue over the merged UTs.
After the merger, India has 8 Union Territories at present.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is composed of four distinct areas located in Western India. Dadra is a small enclave within the state of Gujarat. Nagar Haveli is a C shaped enclave located between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra which contains a counter enclave of Gujarat around the village of Maghval. Daman is an enclave on the coast of Gujarat and Diu is an island off the coast of Gujarat. Daman and Diu were under Portuguese administration from the 1500s until they were annexed by India in 1961. Dadra and Nagar Haveli were under Portuguese administration between 1818 and being annexed by India in 1954. Portugal formally recognised Indian sovereignty over the areas in 1974. More Info
