Indian Railways has innovated into providing cheap and potable drinking water through ‘atmospheric water generator’ technology. This technology called Meghdoot has cleared the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) water quality standards.

Crux of the Matter

  1. Atmospheric Water Generator kiosk, developed by Maithri Aquatech under Make in India, has the potential to produce 1,000 litres water per day.

  2. Conserve Water, Conserve Life: Railways introduces ‘Meghdoot’ device to harvest water directly from air, which is then filtered & remineralised for drinking,” said Piyush Goyal.

  3. The technology creates potable water, literally, out of thin air. Firstly, it sucks air through the air filter. The moist air then passes over the condenser surfaces. Finally, it is collected in the tank.

  4. First such technology has been adopted by the Secunderabad Railway Station of the South Central Railways (SCR) as a part of its green initiatives.

  5. Passengers can get 1 litre water at Rs. 8, and if the passenger brings her own bottle then at Rs. 5. 300 ml water can be availed at Rs. 3, while at Rs. 2 if carrying own glass or bottle. 500 ml water can be bought at Rs. 5, while at Rs. 3 if carrying own bottle or glass.

Curiopedia

An atmospheric water generator (AWG) is a device that extracts water from humid ambient air. Water vapor in the air can be extracted by condensation – cooling the air below its dew point, exposing the air to desiccants, or pressurizing the air. Unlike a dehumidifier, an AWG is designed to render the water potable. AWGs are useful where pure drinking water is difficult or impossible to obtain, because there is almost always a small amount of water in the air that can be extracted. The two primary techniques in use are cooling and desiccants. More Info
