Protest against CAA Turns Violent in Delhi's Seelampur

Clashes erupted between police and a violent mob after the crowd marching in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act was stopped by the police from moving forward at the Seelampur Chowk in East Delhi at around 2 pm on December 17. Massive stone pelting, damage to DTC buses and tear gas shelling is being reported.

Crux of the Matter

1. The protest began at around 12 pm. The protesters raised slogans against the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

2. The violent protests in Seelampur littered roads with stones, damaged window paned of buses and remains of motorbikes along with thousands of people on the streets.

3. Mosques made appeals via loudspeaker asking people to maintain peace and remain calm.

4. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also closed the entry and exit gates of seven metro stations near the Seelampur area in northeast Delhi due to the protest.

5. Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Sharma was injured in the clash as he was hit on the head by a stone.

6. Police brought the situation under control in the area but is not aware of the organisation behind the protest.
