S Jaishankar Stresses on Need for Greater Realism in Policy Making

Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar delivered the fourth Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture, on the topic “Beyond the Delhi Dogma: Indian Foreign Policy in a Changing World”, wherein he spoke on the last 70 years of India’s foreign policy choices and challenged past positions.


Crux of the Matter


  1. He spoke about lessons from the past, as he stressed the “need for greater realism in policy”.

  2. He spoke on how India is dealing with China on boundary issues and handling Pakistan to managing ties with the US.

  3. Today the government has an approach to takes risks as well as hedges, inject greater realism in policies and read the global tea leaves right.

  4. He also critiqued on India’s decision to go to the UN on Kashmir issue saying, “going to the United Nations on Jammu & Kashmir clearly misread the intent of the Anglo-American alliance then and of the seriousness of the Cold War.”

  5. He shared his knowledge and experiences on a wide range of events that included relations with the US, ASEAN & BRICS, Uri & Balakot Strikes, wars with Pakistan and many more.

He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Gujarat. He was earlier president of Global Corporate Affairs at Tata Sons Private Limited. He was Foreign Secretary from 2015-18, Ambassador to United States from 2013-15, Ambassador to China from 2009-2013, High Commissioner to Singapore from 2007-2009 and Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2000-2004.
