The GoI has approved setting up 2,636 electric vehicle charging stations across 62 cities in 24 states and union territories of India under the second phase of FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles). The move is meant to encourage manufacturers to launch new electric vehicles models.
Crux of the Matter
The Department of Heavy Industry had invited the Expressions of Interest, for submission of proposal for availing incentives under FAME India Scheme Phase II for deployment of EV charging infrastructure within Indian cities.
As a result, 106 proposals were received from public/private entities for the deployment of about 7,000 EV charging stations.
Out of these 2,636 charging stations, 1,633 and 1,003 will be fast and slow stations respectively.
According to Union Heavy Industries Minister Prakash Javadekar, this will encourage the OEMs to launch the new electric vehicle models which they were hesitant because of lack of charging infrastructure.
