
Parliament unanimously passed the Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill, 2019 extending the reservations for the SC/ST category for ten years up to 25 January 2030.
Crux of the Matter
The reservation was set to expire on the 25th January 2020.
352 members of the Lok Sabha unanimously voted in favour and zero against the Bill.
Minister of Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “a new generation of leadership is arising from among the deprived communities due to the political reservation being extended to them.”
PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “our government is ‘unwaveringly committed’ towards the empowerment of the marginalised sections of society.”
Government is also working with the Supreme Court to increase the representation of the deprived sections in the judiciary.
