Amidst heated discussions and protests, Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 3. The Lok Sabha has already passed the Bill on November 27.
Crux of the Matter
The 5th amendment in the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill 2019 restricts the use of elite SPG security.
The amended law will provide security to former prime ministers and their immediate family members staying with them for a period of five years from the date on which they cease to hold the office.
Congress party claiming political vendetta walked out of the Rajya Sabha protesting over the withdrawal of SPG cover to the Gandhi family.
Speaking in the favour of the bill, Amit Shah said, “Security cannot be made a status symbol. We don’t oppose one family, we are against dynasty politics,”
Amit Shah also informed about the alternative security measures given to Gandhi family members after the withdrawal of SPG security.
Curiopedia
The Indian Special Protection Group (SPG) is a special force for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Ministers of India and members of their immediate family. After the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984, a review was undertaken by a Committee of Secretaries and it was decided to entrust the security of the Prime Minister to a Special Group under the unitary and direct control of a designated Officer. The SPG came into being on 8 April 1985 when S. Subramaniam, then Joint Director (VIP Security) in the Intelligence Bureau assumed office. Creation of the SPG required an elaborate exercise in order to clearly delineate responsibility of various agencies concerned with the security of the Prime Minister. More Info
