Twitter to Provide India with Information of 474 Accounts

The Indian government has inquired with Twitter to furnish information of 474 accounts and delete or block content of 504 accounts on violating the country’s rules, in the first half of 2016.


Crux of the Matter


  1. Twitter has helped India with five percent of information requests, and six percent of removal requests.

  2. “Compared to the previous reporting period, we received roughly 67 per cent more legal requests to remove content, originating from 49 different countries. Of the requests received, 80 per cent of the volume originated from Japan, Russia, and Turkey. We withheld content in a country 2,457 times, at either an account or Tweet level,” quoted Twitter.

  3. With the ban of political advertisements, Twitter will be undertaking a policy overhaul.
