Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray became the first of his dynasty to hold an official post as he was sworn in as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 28 November. His appointment as CM comes after more than a month of political tussle between Shiv Sena, BJP, NCP and Congress for the throne of Maharashtra.
Crux of the Matter
The pre-poll alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena had a clear majority in the Maharashtra assembly elections that were held in October. Tussle between the 2 parties for the post of CM had led to a month’s worth of deadlock in the state.
In the past month the 4 major contenders BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP and Shiv Sena had been trying to hash out different post-poll coalitions. November saw Maharashtra being put under President’s rule when no consensus could be reached.
Ex-CM Devendra Fadnavis of BJP, the party with the largest number of seats in the assembly, had assumed the post late last week with tacit support of part of NCP led by Ajit Pawar. He resigned in 3 days when the support could not be formalised.
In the mean time Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress have formed a post poll alliance called ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’. Uddhav Thackeray has been selected as the CM by this coalition.
Uddhav Thackeray had not contested the elections, although his party won the 2nd largest share of seats, almost half as many as BJP. He will have to be elected as an MLA within 6 months, which should be a formality.
