On January 28th Britain allowed Huawei a limited role in supplying new high-speed 5G network equipment to wireless carriers. US has expressed its unhappiness with the British allowing the Chinese tech company to play a role in Britain’s high-speed wireless network.

Crux of the Matter

US has been lobbying European allies to ban Huawei over concerns with electronic eavesdropping. It has warned that it would stop intelligence sharing if Huawei is not banned.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met British PM Boris Johnson to re-register American concerns about Huawei’s presence in Britain’s 5G network which would severely disrupt intelligence sharing within the so-called ‘Five Eyes’ partnership of English-speaking nations that includes the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

I am confident that as we work together to figure out how to implement this decision that we’ll work to get this right. – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

Mike Pompeo also said that the U.S. and Britain would retain and enhance their special relationship after Brexit. U.S. and Britain are expected to negotiate a major free-trade deal as Brexit is now complete.

Curiopedia

The Five Eyes (FVEY) is an anglophone intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. These countries are parties to the multilateral UKUSA Agreement, a treaty for joint cooperation in signals intelligence. In recent years, documents of the FVEY have shown that they are intentionally spying on one another’s citizens and sharing the collected information with each other in order to circumvent restrictive domestic regulations on spying. As the surveillance capabilities of the FVEY continue to increase to keep up to pace with technological advancements, a global surveillance system has been gradually developed to capture the communications of entire populations across national borders.
