With its recent actions concerning territories, Nepal added strain to its relations with India while strengthening ties somewhere else.


Crux of the Matter


Amended Map After raising the issue of disputed territories, the House of Representatives of Nepal passed the amended map of the country which includes Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura in its own, territories originally included in the map of India. The move comes at a time when India is engaged in LAC border standoff with China. At the same time, Nepal blamed India for the spread of Covid-19 in it.

Rejection Of US Aid? The government of Nepal has been under pressure to cancel its Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant from the US. In the deal, the US would support Nepal with $500 million to develop its power transmission lines and road structures. Experts have claimed that the pressure to reject deal is coming from China, which is under severe criticism from the US for its dealing of the Covid-19, with Trump claiming that the WHO is shielding China.

Chinese Whisper In Nepal Recently, several schools in Nepal made Mandarin, the official language of China, compulsory in schools. The step was propelled by China, which would cover the salaries of the Mandarin language teachers. The move has received criticism from syllabus developers who have disapproved of the step of making any subject compulsory.

Influence Of China In Nepal Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is Nepal’s ruling party backed by the Communist Party of China, the Chinese incumbent ruling group. The influence of China on Nepal has increased in recent years, with that of India’s waning. In 2019, Xi Jinping became the first Chinese president since 1996 to visit Nepal. The countries eventually agreed on a deal, where China would invest half a billion dollars in Nepal for development projects. In comparison, the GDPs of Dominica and Tonga are $0.49 billion and $0.42 billion respectively. The influence of China in politics of Nepal has grown to the level that the Chinese embassy acted as a mediator between the conflicting sides of the NCP.

Reality is such that after the political change [removal of monarchy in 2008]… China has strongly positioned itself in Nepal and scaled up its engagement in more than one way. The rebellion was launched by the CPN-M on 13 February 1996 with the stated purpose of overthrowing the Nepalese monarchy and establishing a People’s Republic. It ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord on 21 November 2006.
